Marking twenty years since the death of Andrés Segovia, the lecture examines the performance of guitar music in the first half of the 20th century, through the repertoire, sound recording and the performance of other instruments in the Romantic period. It shows that a performance tradition became established on the guitar with a wide divergence of the performance from the score, borrowed to a large extent from late Romanticism, and that rubato remained a principal interpretive means even in the second half of the century.
