The essay examines silence as an expressive element of music and as a mirror of today’s society. Today’s listener, flooded with loud sounds, is more “vulnerable” to soft music and to silence. Silence became a primary expressive means in the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, and the text concludes that it portrays a society “apparently noisy; in essence, however, silent”.
