Abstract

The historical study approaches the life and work of Dimitri Fampas as a rare opportunity to examine the conditions under which the guitar developed in Greece. It traces how he moved from the naval career towards which his family pushed him to a career as a guitar soloist, and follows his studies with Andrés Segovia in Italy and Spain. It proposes that his work be assessed not on the basis of his “firsts”, but by the criteria of daring, passion and devotion to his art. It also examines his collaboration with the composers of the “art-popular song”, the Guitar School he created at the National Conservatory, and his contribution to establishing a guitar repertoire in Greece with his own compositions, especially the Greek Dances.
