Music Studies in Higher Education, through the curriculum of the Department of Music Studies of the University of Athens

Music Studies in Higher Education, through the curriculum of the Department of Music Studies of the University of Athens (Orion Conservatory), Athens, 2.2.2019

Abstract

The presentation is addressed to music students and aims to provide information for their career orientation, through the curriculum of the Department of Music Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. It begins with the question of why it is worth knowing the curriculum of a music department: the options are many, each department has a different profile, and its name reveals little about it. It presents the Department, founded in 1991, part of the School of Philosophy and scholarly in profile; the undergraduate programme, with its four specialisations (Historical and Systematic Musicology, Ethnomusicology and Cultural Anthropology, Music Acoustics and Sound Technology, Byzantine Musicology), the categories of courses, the thesis and the teaching qualification; the five postgraduate programmes and the doctoral dissertations; the performing ensembles, the students and the career paths of graduates. It closes with a discussion.

Presentation. The presentation was given at the invitation of the Orion Conservatory, in Athens, on Saturday 2 February 2019.
