Dimitri Fampas (1921-1996): a pioneer of the Greek Guitar School

Tassos Kolydas, Dimitri Fampas (1921-1996): a pioneer of the Greek Guitar School, (Hellenic Musicological Editions) Athens, 2017, Panas Music.

Abstract

The monograph presents the life and work of Dimitri Fampas (1921–1996), who, together with Gerassimos Miliaressis, was a pioneer of the rapid spread of the classical guitar in Greece during the second half of the twentieth century and of the founding of the Greek Guitar School. After the biography, it examines separately the three fields of his activity: the performer (technique, repertoire, interpretation, audience), the teacher (content and method of teaching, the students’ achievements, legal recognition of the teaching) and the composer, examining fifty-six works published in fourteen editions. It includes a catalogue of works and appendices with quantitative data on his career and his teaching. It combines the tools of Historical and Systematic Musicology and was published as the 19th volume of the series Hellenic Musicological Editions.
