(2024)

What the Swallows Did is from the short story of the same name by Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888). The text is the man’s farewell to the swallows whom he had grown fond of after a summer spent together.

The music paints the words, falling in couplets and imitating flight in rising patterns. The piece can be sung by three women’s voices, or with doubling up to 12 voices

Patriotic Medley

(2024)

After an introduction in the style of a trumpet voluntary, the ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ enters quietly. The next melody is ‘America The Beautiful’, placed over running patterns in the left hand.  It is between the phrases of ‘America The Beautiful’ that the service melodies are interspersed: 'Off We Go' [Air Force], ‘Anchors Aweigh’ [Navy], ‘The Army Goes Rolling Along’ [Army], ‘The Marine’s Hymn’ [Marine Corps]. The piece finishes with ‘Taps’ rising in the bass against ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ in the treble.
